Dave Does Digger

Three of my Air Force friends, Soppy, Ernie and Skip, and I follow NASCAR and chat via email while the races are going on. It is a fun time. When the Digger T-shirts hit the market some of us just had to have them.

As you probably know, Shirley is a crafty person and she said that she could probably make me a Digger T-shirt.

Don't know what Digger is?

From Fox Sports:

FOX Gopher Cam made its stunning debut at the 2008 Daytona 500 on FOX, providing breathtaking views of NASCAR's top drivers as they whizzed by at 185 mph, just inches away from the high-definition, point-of-view camera. It was the first time that a camera had been installed below the surface of a superspeedway track (let alone the four of them that were embedded in the track at Daytona International Speedway). The cameras were also paired with high quality condenser microphones, another first, to provide an unbelievably realistic audio/video experience.

And there's even more gopher action to come.

FOX Gopher Cams are currently being installed in all NASCAR on FOX Sprint Cup race locations. Because while the wiring and stainless steel housing for the FOX Gopher Cams remain in place after each race, the cameras themselves travel with FOX to the next race location, ready to provide their gopher-eye view of all the action.

"Television's never-ending goal is to bring the viewer as close to the action as possible," said FOX Sports Chairman David Hill. "We've had great past success with Catcher-Cam and Diamond-Cam in our MLB coverage and Grass Cam and Wall-Cam in NASCAR on FOX broadcasts.

"However, FOX Gopher Cam, and forgive us for having some fun with the name, is different. These are HD cameras developed specifically for this use. The pictures are phenomenal, and the audio that the mikes provide is mean and loud. It's a tremendous complement to our Emmy-caliber NASCAR broadcasts."

In fact, there was just one problem: The poor gopher didn't have a name.

But that's where the fans came in.

During the California Sprint Cup Series race, the NASCAR on FOX team asked for suggestions. And following a record number of e-mails with name recommendations, the name Digger was selected.

Make sure to tune in to NASCAR on FOX and watch all the action Digger captures from the track.
